A finance payment can hide the real cost
Start with the amortising payment where that finance structure applies, then add insurance, tax, fuel or charging, maintenance and other recurring costs. Keep balloon or residual-value finance outside a standard loan formula unless those cash flows are modelled explicitly.
A useful way to study the true cost of car affordability is to separate the calculation from the decision. The calculation answers a narrow question using stated inputs; the decision also depends on timing, liquidity, uncertainty, fees, taxes, contractual terms and what happens if an assumption is wrong. Start by writing the financial position in categories that can be checked independently. If a figure cannot be verified, label it as an estimate and test a reasonable range instead of relying on false precision.
A practical exercise is to build a baseline using today's best-known numbers, then change one important input at a time. Keep the other assumptions fixed so the effect is visible. After that, combine two adverse changes to see whether the conclusion is still robust. This method is deliberately simple: it does not predict the future, but it shows which variable has the greatest leverage and where a small amount of extra margin could materially improve resilience.
Finish by writing a short decision note: what was assumed, what evidence supports those assumptions, what could invalidate them, and when the calculation should be reviewed. That habit is especially useful for the true cost of car affordability because the inputs can change while the original reasoning is easily forgotten. A model becomes more valuable when someone can return later, update the changed facts, and understand why the earlier conclusion moved.
Depreciation is an assumption, not a quote
A car can lose value without producing a monthly bill. Include depreciation when comparing total ownership economics, but show the annual rate or future-value assumption clearly. Vehicle, mileage, condition and market demand can make actual resale value very different.
Compare alternatives on the same distance
Fuel and EV charging comparisons should use the same annual distance. Convert litres-per-100-km or kWh-per-100-km consistently and include charging losses when relevant. A cost-per-mile view can then combine finance and ownership costs on one basis.
A repeatable decision method
Start with the facts you can verify today, separate them from assumptions, and keep one consistent unit and time period across the comparison. Then change one important assumption at a time before combining adverse cases. A result is more useful when you can explain what moved it than when it produces one precise-looking number.
