How to Read FinTrex UK Tax Estimates for 2026/27
Understand the rule scope behind take-home, bonus, dividend, CGT, self-employed and VAT estimates and the cases that require a more specific calculation.
Tax calculations need a jurisdiction and rule year
FinTrex tax tools do not use one global tax formula. The 2026/27 UK payroll model is explicitly scoped to its stated jurisdiction and uses versioned Income Tax and employee National Insurance rules. Dividend, Capital Gains Tax, self-employed and VAT tools each state their own simplified boundary.
Incremental tax is not the same as an average rate
A bonus or pay rise can cross a threshold, so the net increase can differ from gross pay multiplied by an average tax rate. Dividend income is stacked on top of other taxable income under the simplified model. For 2026/27, the £500 dividend allowance is charged at 0% but still uses tax-band capacity, so it can affect which rate applies to dividends above the allowance. Capital gains and self-employed estimates likewise depend on the specific inputs and excluded reliefs.
Do not infer a filing result from an educational estimate
Tax codes, benefits, student loans, residence, Scotland, losses, reliefs, payments on account, asset type and other income can change the actual liability. Use the calculator to understand the mechanics, then verify a real filing decision against current official guidance or a qualified professional.

Match the calculator to the tax question
Use the payroll tool for employment take-home mechanics, the dividend tool for dividend income, the capital-gains tool for a simplified gain estimate, and the self-employed model only within its stated boundary. Combining outputs from separate simplified tools does not automatically recreate a full Self Assessment calculation because allowances, ordering rules, reliefs and other income can interact.
Verify the rule year before acting
The 2026/27 examples in this lesson are tied to the rule year stated by the calculator. Before using a tax estimate for a filing or payment decision, check that the relevant GOV.UK or HMRC source still matches the period and circumstance being modeled. The official starting points linked by the calculator take priority over a remembered rate or an older screenshot.
